Definition: To treat in a condescending manner

Synonyms: Arrogant, Disdainful, Smart-ass, Snobbish

Example:

"You’re smart,” Guidry said. “And I want you to know I don’t like it. Because I think the only thing you can do is just aggravate him, trying to put something in his head against his will. And I’d rather see a contented hog go to that chair than an aggravated hog. It would be better for everybody concerned. There ain’t a thing you can put in that skull that ain’t there already.”

-"A Lesson Before Dying" by Earnest Gaines

Explanation:

Gaines employs an extremely apparent patronizing tone in this passage by using smart ass comments and choosing words that this particular character very arrogant. By using smart as comments like "You’re smart...and i want you to know i don't like it" is extremely patronizing because this officer immediately puts himself higher than Grant, which makes him more snobbish than the French. This officer is being a gigantic smart ass because he is stating his opinion in a manner that is meant to intimidate and anger Grant: he claims that "There ain’t a thing you can put in that skull that ain’t there already.” this comment is very uncalled for because he hasn't even giving Grant a chance, and is meant just to get Grant to back out of what he came to do.
